Sometimes all it takes is one match to edge one’s name in the heart of the fans, and that game came when Atletico visited Liverpool in the round of 16 of the Champions League for Marcos Llorente.
Llorente entered the match in the second half, as Simeone was looking to add even more steel as he came in for Costa. No one could have predicted what was about to transpire.
Llorente who had played sparsely for the Atleti side since securing his move from the local rivals Real Madrid, went on to score two goals from outside the penalty area that every striker would be proud of.
First came after Adrian made a mistake and he pounced upon the gifted opportunity to tie the aggregate score and give Atletico the advantage on away goal.
He didn’t have to wait too long for the second as he applied a sublime finish from a ball from Morata to give Atleti the lead. If that wasn’t enough he also provided the assist which Morata buried to win the match along with the tie.
No one would have guessed a defensive midfielder would be the one taking the matters in his own hands and that too at Anfield and would be responsible for knocking the wind out of high flying Liverpool who were considered the favourites for the competition.
Safe to say that, that match was special for him and the Atleti fanbase.
We recently got a glimpse of how special it was when Llorente recently uploaded a pic on Instagram where it can be seen his dog has been named as Anfield’.
Apparently bored by the nothingness of the lockdown, he commented: “Anfield watching life go by”.
Sure to say, this isn’t gonna sit well with the Liverpool fans.
