Leon Goretzka has been honored as the Sportsman of the year in the annual 2020 GQ Men of the Year Awards (Germany edition) for his exemplary attitude both on and off the pitch.
In a year the world was unhinged, we honor people who have shown their attitude. Who have stood up for others. And who have shown what it means to lead the way, to be a role model.
Men’s magazine GQ has an annual tradition of honoring outstanding personalities in their respective fields
Besides being outstanding on the field with Bayern Munich, Goretzka also held a strong voice against racism and participated in the fight against covid-19 pandemic through ‘We Kick Corona’ campaign.
Leon Goretzka was instrumental for a Bayern Munich side which completed the treble last season.
The 25-year-old has been winning duels on the pitch and it seems he has been showing the same form off it as well.
Here’s what Goretzka said as he accepted the award during a virtual ceremony –
“I feel that giving something back in this difficult time is both a great privilege and a responsibility.”
“We all show responsibility in these months by wearing a mask by protecting not only ourselves but also others from Corona.”
“But our responsibility doesn’t end when we take the mask off. We also have to take responsibility for issues like racism, sexism, integration and inclusion.”
“As a citizen in Germany and as a German in the world. We can take our future into our hands not only on the pitch, but also on the street and online.”
