Former Manchester United youth player Sam Johnstone perhaps did his old side a big favor in this season’s title race after he denied Roberto Firmino a certain goal in the dying minutes of the 1-1 draw against Liverpool.
New manager Sam Allardyce surprised reigning champions Liverpool as West Brom earned themselves a well-deserved point at Anfield.
Sadio Mane had put the hosts in the front just 12 minutes into the game and Liverpool looked to be in cruise control while enjoying 82 percent of the possession in the first half.
But the Baggies gradually started to grow into the game as the Reds failed to make any clear cut chances.
Joel Matip’s injury in the second half then suddenly changed the momentum and nerves got the better of Liverpool.
It was a tactical masterclass from the veteran English manager as West Brom leveled the scoreline in the 82nd minute after Semi Ajayi walked all over Fabinho and planted a header across Alisson.
As expected, Liverpool threw the kitchen sink and almost managed to grab a late winner but for an otherworldly save from Sam Johnstone.
