Arsenal failed to preserve their lead as they drew their last Premier League outing with Burnley. An early strike from Pierre Emerick Aubameyang as early as in the 6th minute was cancelled out by Chris Wood’s goal for Burnley, but Arsenal have no one but themselves to blame for letting their opponents back into the match.

Granit Xhaka’s lapse of concentration resulted in him making a mistake – he smashed the ball into Wood while attempting a clearance off the face of his own goal. The ball ricocheted off the New Zealander’s hip and travelled into the back of the net past Bernd Leno, much to Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta and their supporters’ despair.

While Wood had a chance to send his team into the lead later on, he was denied by Leno this time. Arsenal could not get themselves back into the lead on the night, as a penalty that was awarded to them by Andre Marriner on the pitch was rescinded by VAR – the ball was adjudged to have struck Erik Pieters on the shoulder instead of his arm.

Dani Ceballos rattled the post after a scramble in the box in second-half stoppage time, but Sean Dyche’s side eventually held on till full time for a point at Turf Moor. Arsenal fans on Twitter were enraged at the Swiss midfielder’s schoolboy error which caused them to drop two important points in the race for a Champions League position, as the team self-imploded while trying to defend a lead once again.
