Another game, another Lionel Messi assist, but this one turned out to be a record-breaking one as the Argentina captain became the top assist-provider in the history of Copa America after Guido Martinez guided his lavish cross inside Uruguay’s net in the first half.
Even if you don’t count the assist, there was some of La Pulga’s best football on display during the win at Mane Garrincha Stadium in Brasilia. Highlighted by his drop of the shoulder and delivery for the goal that gave Uruguay no chance.
Messi’s genius was expected, but the surprising aspect of this win was the disciplined defensive organisation on display from Argentina.
The Albiceleste denied the likes of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani – who have now gone 4 games without a goal – any space and time as they held on to their lead till the final whistle.
