England advanced to the UEFA Euro 2020 quarter-final with a 2-0 win against Germany.
After a particularly drab first half, the Wembley crowd seemed to be determined to make the occasion count, as choruses of “God Save The Queen” and “Sweet Caroline” reverberated around the stadium – and clearly pushed the England players towards success.
Raheem Sterling broke the deadlock, and then captain Kane added a second to send the result beyond doubt, and the supporters into absolute delirium – revenge for the 1996 EURO semi-final loss had been exacted.
Kane addressed the brilliant crowd support in his post-match press conference – when asked by an ITV reporter about his thoughts on the performance, he spent a couple of moments to soak the atmosphere in, and followed it up by saying that he was “speechless”.
While the loud and electric supporters sang on to provide the backing track for the skipper’s speech, an overwhelmed Kane was quite short for words – he simply said that it was “an amazing day and an amazing game.”
“I’m speechless.”
