Todd Cantwell registered the best assist of this year’s football pre-season so far with a bicycle kick effort when Norwich met Gillingham.
The 23-year-old Englishman – who excelled for Norwich City in the 2019/2020 season when the Canaries earned their promotion back to the Premier League – went for the spectacular and incredibly achieved it. And in some style.
The Norwich playmaker got hold of the ball in the middle third and sprayed it wide while making his way into the penalty area.
The Canaries recycled the ball out wide and rewarded Cantwell with a pass for his intelligent off-the-ball movement.
And that is when Cantwell brought his party piece out, as he controlled the ball with his first touch before flicking it up.
It was a show of pure showmanship as well as ability by the attacking midfielder as he went head over heels, and came up with an excellent overhead kick that found its way to the far post – where Adam Isah touched it in.
The reaction of the Gillingham defenders after the goal says it all, as the tired and exasperated opponents were outplayed over 90 minutes – the Canaries flew to a 5-0 win at the Aviva.
As for the assist, Cantwell was showered with applause from the players and fans alike.
The Englishman will want to impress once again this season after he scored six times and assisted 11 times when Norwich were promoted to the top flight, but eventually finished bottom of the table.
The incredible overhead kick went viral on social media platforms as fans were stunned by the composure to flick up a ball in style, and the brilliance of the strike from a tough angle.
Cantwell looks full of confidence ahead of the upcoming Premier League season, as the men in canary yellow under Daniel Farke will look to try and survive their top-flight status.
