On Monday night, Lionel Messi won the prestigious Ballon d’Or for a record 7th time. An incredible record that would take a herculean effort to replicate.

A bit of controversy surrounded the decision as some felt that perhaps Robert Lewandowski was more deserving of the title.

However, Messi’s 7th triumph seemed to seal the ‘GOAT’ debate for a lot of fans on Twitter.

Even Twitter’s official sports handle chimed in with their opinion, changing their profile picture and clearly showing the Argentine as the greatest of all time.

The celebrations were underway and the hashtag “Messi” was the highest trending topic on Twitter globally.

German sportswear brand and Messi’s sponsor Adidas soon posted a picture showcasing another splendid manner of marking the occasion.

Perhaps inspired by the iconic announcement video of Messi’s move to PSG, which featured his 6 Ballon d’Or awards lavishly laid out in front of the gorgeous Eiffel Tower, this image instead contained 7 gold-plated statues of a glorious looking goat surrounded by 7 balls in front of the resplendent monument.

Written beneath the image were the words “A legacy unrivalled,” maybe a statement conveying victory in the long-standing GOAT debate.

Messi during his acceptance speech admitted that he himself was doubtful of winning another Ballon d’Or, the Argentine said, “Two years ago I thought it was the last time. People were starting to ask me when I was going to retire but now I’m here in Paris and very happy.”

The era of Messi and Ronaldo will soon draw to a close since both legends are nearly at the climax of their career, the GOAT debates will surely rage on long after they’ve hung up their boots. So, whether you’re team LM10 or CR7, savour the final years of the legendary duo.
