When the stand-in Comoros goalkeeper forgot the position he was playing in

AFCON 2021 is simply a gift that keeps on giving.

This celebration of the beautiful game in the African continent is far from perfect, after all, what is?

The quality of football can be poor, the state of the pitch can be rugged and the officiating can be infuriating.

Nonetheless, nothing can take away from the sheer passion on show from the players and the story of Comoros’ Chaker Alhadhur is the ideal example.

The relatively unknown nation battled against the odds and earned a berth in the final 16 of the tournament.

Unfortunately, right before the knockout game against Cameroon, Comoros learned that they were without a goalkeeper.

First choice Ben Boina was already out due to injury and the backups had tested positive for COVID 19.

Up stepped Alhadhur, a left-back by trade, and valiantly donned on the keeper’s gloves at a pivotal time.

His efforts throughout the game were certainly commendable, the makeshift goalie even pulled off a spectacular double save, one which would make any keeper proud.

Naturally, his heroic highlights drew plenty of praise from fans online.

However, it’s worth pointing out that at times the 30-year-old’s defensive instincts took over him.

With only a few training sessions under his belt, the fullback can become forgiven for not having the finest technique.

But at times, especially in the first half, Alhadhur seemed to forget that he was in goal altogether!

During Cameron’s second goal, the fullback forgot his position and placed his hands behind his back instead of charging the man on the ball.

After the halftime break, perhaps due to a telling off by his gaffer, Alhadhur seemed in tune with his position and kept his side in the game at times.

Despite his side being unable to conjure up a comeback, Comoros’ journey to the last 16 and Alhadhur’s valiant goalkeeper will be fondly remembered.
