Atletico Madrid in true ‘Atletico’ fashion pulled off a memorable victory in the Champions League at Old Trafford last night.
On the back of a 1-1 first leg at the Wanda Metropolitano, the Colchoneros scored in the 40th minute and held on for a 1-0 victory against Manchester United.
The win itself was classic Diego Simeone, teetering on the edge of a ‘smash and grab’.
His side effectively sustained through the pressure employed by United in the early stages, before scoring on the counter.
What followed was determined defending as part of a low block, aided by a gentle stroke of luck. The full-time whistle rang, the Argentine manager scurried into the tunnel dodging the drinks being pelted at him, and those in blue celebrated a famous victory.
And of course, the celebrations carried on to Twitter, rivals fans flooded to the platform parading United’s European collapse, and even Atletico Madrid’s Twitter account turned up the banter.
Theatre of Dreams –
Old Trafford, the iconic football venue deemed as ‘The Theatre of Dreams’ by Sir Bobby Charlton has hosted decades of dominance by United.
The 7-1 thrashing of Roma, Scholes’ strike in the 1-0 victory against Barcelona, number ‘Fergie-time’ wins, Old Trafford has been the stage for iconic moments.
Unfortunately, last night the venue hosted an unforgettable night for Atletico, and they reminded everyone of the fact with this tweet.

Anthem stealing –
Conceived in 1993, the United anthem ‘Glory Glory Man United’ remains the go-to chant for Red Devils, and is simultaneously, one of the most popular football-related songs ever created.
Atletico, in a now-deleted tweet, changed the lyrics of the famous GGMU chant and added their own spin, much to the irritation of United fans.
Nevertheless, neutrals online loved it.
