How Emerson Royal has become Twitter famous thanks to his matchday comps

Emerson Royal, Tottenham Hotspur

Since making his switch from Spain, Emerson Royal has done well to integrate himself quickly into the Tottenham squad and has locked down a starting 11 spot. It was a topsy-turvy transfer situation that led to the player’s arrival in north London during the 2021 summer transfer window.

As Barcelona looked set to retain the player back following the end of his two-year loan spell with Real Betis, Spurs arrived at the table with a €30million bid for the player. With cash-strapped Barcelona needing the money, the Spanish club agreed to a last-minute sale in August and now, it looks very much like the English side got the better deal with the transfer.

Barcelona had to go into the market to replace Emerson and were able to do so by calling back a 39-year-old Dani Alves to provide cover at right-back along with Sergino Dest while Spurs have got an energetic and pacey full-back as a starter. The Brazilian has made 28 appearances for Spurs in the Premier League this season and has scored and assisted a goal each in this time.

Under Antonio Conte, Emerson has thrived in a more attacking role as a wing-back on the right flank. His speed and strength are attributes perfect for the position and the player’s Brazilian heritage has also led to him putting on a show for the Spurs supporters with his flair-filled play.

Emerson Royal matchday comps are the one thing Spurs fans long for every week

Dropping shoulder, cut-backs, nutmegs, he’s pulled them all out during games this season and at the same time, Emerson has ensured that Spurs fans can feast their eyes on his performances by posting compilations of his moves on his official Twitter account. The Brazilian has made it a tradition to post comps on his account since as early as March which has been a massive hit amongst fans.

A typical Emerson comp would be accompanied by some hype tunes that add a dramatic quality as well to the visuals.

Following the 1-1 draw at Anfield, Emerson posted another compilation which featured his shift at right wing-back against the Merseyside club. The footage consists of Emerson cleaning up loose balls, going toe to toe with Liverpool’s pacey Luis Diaz and finally, the Brazilian’s pinpoint long pass from the left flank to Harry Kane that ultimately finished with Son Heung-min scoring the only goal of the night in Anfield.

With the crucial North London Derby against Arsenal coming up to decide the UCL qualification spots, Emerson would be hoping to help his team against them and if successful, football fans now know exactly how he would celebrate it.
