Manchester City has now moved three points clear at the top of the Premier League after thrashing Newcastle United 5-0 over the weekend. The much-deserved win after the drubbing in Spain has given a tremendous boost to the title hopes of the Citizens.
City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, was all smiles as he pumped his fists in the air after their convincing win against Newcastle, and maybe thought of going out to celebrate his team’s victory. A noble thought, but the choice of his attire sparked another feeding frenzy for the football netizens, who are always ready to pounce on any bizarre mistake made by the Spanish manager on and off the pitch.
On a pleasant summer evening in Manchester, Pep was seen strolling while wearing a baggy pink jumper with a pair of shoes that looked like a modernistic version of the iconic All-Star Converse. This bizarre choice of clothing raised many questions from the fans who are accustomed to Pep’s iconic blue or black turtleneck with crisp black pants on the sidelines.
Pep has always been received as a manager who dresses exquisitely. Be it charcoal grey suits in his first season at the Etihad Stadium or a grey cardigan in the subsequent one, the Spaniard doesn’t go out of style and out of bounds.
Fans were curious about the brand of clothes, whether this was something homemade by his wife or some designer who played a joke on him. As it turns out, Pep was wearing the $1200 worth Balenciaga Men’s Red Striped Sweater in the picture.
However, this isn’t the first time that Pep has surprised everyone with his wardrobe choices. Back in 2019, the 51-year-old manager attended a press conference where he wore a technicolour sweater that looked completely contrary to the dark shades of clothes that he is known for. And even for that, Pep received a lot of flak from the fashion police.
The netizens weren’t short of digs. A fan posted a photo of the fictional character, Freddy Krueger, from the horror movie Nightmare on elm street and drew uncanny resemblances to the sweater of the protagonist that Pep was wearing. The same internet that praised Pep for his footballing mind was now on his heels, joking and faffing about one unusual appearance that might stick with the fans forever.
But some internet fashionistas came to Pep’s support and claimed that the picture might be photoshopped as the Spaniard couldn’t stoop so low in his fashion sense. Whatever the case may be, it looks like Pep would want to get rid of that jumper as soon as possible.
For if City wins the Premier League under his tutelage for the fourth time, he cannot surprise the football fans with such an odd choice yet again.
