Karim Benzema has been electric this season. The Los Blancos no.9 has contributed 66 g/a for both club and country this season, which sees him as the frontrunner for the Ballon d’Or.
After helping them secure the La Liga title, Benzema helped his club to a 14th Uefa Champions League title. By doing so he along with 9 other teammates equalled Ronaldo’s record of winning 5 UCL trophies.
The French forward was quick to celebrate his achievement. Immediately after the victory, the striker posted a photo on Instagram with his teammates where he can be seen holding up 5 fingers.
However, no matter how good you are, there is often someone better. Benzema was reminded of this by his manager Carlo Ancelotti. During the celebrations, the Italian reminded his star striker that he has won 6 trophies by holding up as many fingers.
When it comes to the Champions League, there is truly no one better than Ancelotti. As a player, he won the trophy twice, and this season he won his 4th as a manager.
If it were not for a miraculous comeback by Liverpool in the 2005 final, Ancelotti would have been clear at the top with 7 trophies. However, the Italian had the last laugh as in his last two matches against the Merseyside opposition in finals, he has come out on top.
Ancelotti has gone from being in mid-table limbo with Everton in the EPL to winning both league and UCL with Madrid in a year. The manager will most likely retire after his Madrid stint.
Next year could be yet another filled with success, this Madrid side is a perfect balance of youth and veterans, and a world-class coach to lead them.
Even if the season is a downer compared to their usual standards, Ancelotti has cemented his legacy in Los Blancos history.
