Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City has been on a rampage in the Premier League by lifting four Premier League titles in the past five seasons. But this glorified domestic campaign has been devoid of the biggest prize in European football — the Champions League title.
This indeed has left some fans furious who now recently have found a new face to blame for all their misery in the European competition.
Look close to the goalkeeping post and you will find Ederson bearing the brunt of some livid Manchester City fans for conceding too many goals and leaving City out of the race for the UCL title.
The Brazilian had an impressive start to the 2021/22 season, but soon a slight dip in form towards the end of the season made some fans uneasy.
They have been quick to bring Thibaut Courtois’s shot-stopping performance to the fore that helped Madrid win another UCL title and also compare him to Liverpool’s Alisson, who they believe is a better saver between the sticks.
For these fans, Ederson has always been a greater distributor from the back and not so much as a goal-stopping machine that can give them a European title like Courtois or Alisson. For them, he can only make passes and bottle victories while facing less attack from City’s opponents.
All this flak has erupted, especially after Real Madrid won the UCL final, with Courtois coming through with a title-winning performance.
Post all this hatred, the fans noticed that Ederson deleted his Twitter account (@edersonmoraes93).
Soon after, the Manchester City faithful stepped in and reminded the other sect of fake fans that Ederson has always been a true Blue and none of the people who truly support the club has a problem with their goalkeeper.
Three consecutive Premier League golden gloves are a testament to his importance to Pep and even though he plays in a world-class team, 120 clean sheets from 241 games is a feat worthy of respect without taking innumerable domestic titles into consideration.
However, a clarification came from Kevin Parker, the General Secretary of Manchester City’s Official Supporters Club, who spoke to club officials and confirmed that Ederson has only deactivated his account to take some time away and spend the rest of his holiday with his family before returning for pre-season.
In his tweet, Kevin mentioned that ‘negativity hasn’t won’ but if a certified goalkeeping general of the club can be trolled despite his immaculate performances, one can only wonder what befalls Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez in the next season.
