The Netherlands is cruising through in this edition of the FIFA World Cup. After topping their group, the Dutch eliminated the US Men’s National team in the round of 16 and are on course to face a rejuvenated Argentina in the Quarter Finals.
Memphis Depay opened the scoring in the 10th minute while a masterclass from Daley Blind and Denzel Dumfries sealed the deal for the Orange army despite a late goal from the USA in the 76th minute of the game.
The match was won fair and square. However, after the game, Depay took to Twitter to share an exchange with the legendary American television host and comedian, Steve Harvey.
In this tweet, we can see a screenshot of a message where Steve is congratulating Depay on his victory over the USA, with Depay acknowledging Steve’s words with a caption, ‘Real always recognize real.’
But why did Steve message Depay after Netherlands’ victory over the USA? The answer is a close association that Depay shared with Steve five years ago.
Steve is a renowned host of the American daytime game show named ‘Family Feud’, which has fans all across the world. In 2017, Depay was still considered a promising forward with the guile and panache of Thierry Henry and Cristiano Ronaldo. At the time, Depay was involved with Lyon in Ligue 1 and was enjoying a flourishing start to his time in France.
Soon, Depay announced his engagement to a girl named Lori Harvey, who he met in the US in 2016 while he was at Manchester United. Lori turned out to be Steve Harvey’s youngest daughter.
After their engagement, Steve tweeted about it and sought blessings from everyone.
But the engagement was short-lived, and the couple went their separate ways after a year. The reason is unknown to date.
Although it looks like, despite this torrid affair between Depay and the Harveys, the Dutch forward is still in the good books of Steve. This might have shocked a few people, but the cat’s out of the bag and everyone knows now that Steve has no beef with Depay.
Depay is in striking hot form and will look to wreak havoc on an Argentinian defence that has received little competition except for the disaster against Saudi Arabia. He’s fit and raring to go.
Expect a few more exchanges between Steve and Depay soon if the Dutch stop the Argentinian march to the World Cup final.
