It’s been nearly a week since the FIFA World Cup saw its dramatic curtain closer.
For almost a month, the quadrennial tournament dominated the headlines and became a constant presence on the Internet’s timeline.
The discourse around the World Cup was endless, and even after its conclusion, fans can’t help but clamor for more.
Of course, all the incessant Footy talk wasn’t to everyone’s liking, and some users on Twitter didn’t shy away from expressing their displeasure.
Among them was a die-hard Taylor Swift stan, who, if you’re familiar with online lingo, usually refer to themselves as ‘Swifties’.
This particular ‘swiftie’ opted to be a bit overzealous in expressing their annoyance, as they essentially compared Football and Music as ‘arts’, and subsequently went on to suggest that any Sport is dwarfed by Music.
They didn’t just belittle the importance of the game either, but also of the individuals playing it by merely trivializing footballers to everyone who ‘can run and kick a ball’.
The controversial take quickly found its way to Football Twitter, who promptly shook off the post-WC blues and started the most ridiculous beef you’ll ever see.
Instead of using the broader terms as present in the original tweet, fans online decided to pit the two primary protagonists of Football and Music against each other, in an attempt to see who was better.
The two individuals fans picked as flag bearers were none other than Lionel Messi and Taylor Swift, and from then on, things got pretty wild.
It quite literally became a contest of one-upmanship, and funnily enough, the two people involved are entirely unaware of all this, and probably couldn’t care less.
Barcelona star Memphis Depay actually ended up being an ace up fans’ sleeves, as the Dutchman’s rap career is proof that ballers can do it all, while musicians would likely struggle with the Footy.
The constant back and forth lasted for hours, and by the end, the original opinion was certainly dead and buried.
And while the Music and Footballs faction were out at war, there were also fans like us, who were just bemused to see this random crossover.
