Napoli are onto something in Serie A this season. They seem to be intent on breaking the monopoly of Juventus as well as the Milan clubs in the league.
Now sitting nine points clear at the top of the table, Luciano Spalletti’s side are on a rampage and wrecking past all the sides they face.
Gli Azzurri’s title charge is being inspired by their star striker Victor Osimhen.
The Nigerian forward is currently enjoying the best form of his career, having scored 12 goals and provided 4 assists in 14 league appearances for them. That involves the brace he scored in the 5-1 battering of title rivals Juventus recently.
Osimhen is operating at another level than any other striker in the league and has made a reputation for being among the best in Europe.
The 24-year-old’s heroics has helped him attract interest from the likes of Manchester United, with many more guaranteed to fight for his services if he becomes available anytime soon.
The Nigerian striker has become a huge fan-favourite at Napoli and their supporters are in love with him right now.
He is especially popular among the match goers at the Stage Diego Armando Maradona after having scored in five of the seven home league games this season.
Osimhen appears to be the first elite centre-forward Napoli have had since Gonzalo Higuain, who scored 66 goals in 149 appearances for them in his career.
The Nigerian star is also getting a lot of love from his supporters for being able to carry the team to a lot of success so far this season.
After scoring his second goal in the 5-1 thrashing of Juventus at the weekend, Osimhen had the entire Diego Maradona Stadium bellowing his name.
Having completed his brace, the 24-year-old darted past the sponsor boards to greet the fans just in front of the stands.
As that happened, the iconic stadium announcer kept repeating Osimhen’s name and evoked amazing emotions from the fans.
It almost felt like the entire city of Naples itself was shouting the Nigerian forward’s name, with the ‘Osimhen’ word echoing all through the stadium and sending the striker himself into a frenzy.
All he could do was send his love back to the fans and celebrate with his teammates. But it looks like Osimhen could have already scripted himself in the history books as one of the best strikers to have ever played for Napoli.
The fans shouting the ‘Osimhen’ name was very similar to the brilliant throwback video of the same Napoli stadium announcer getting the crowd to let out a huge noise when describing Higuain’s name after one of his goals during his stint at the Diego Maradona stadium.
When it comes to goals-to-game ratio, Osimhen is actually on course to beat Higuain’s goal tally at Napoli – if he stays at the club for a longer time.
In 79 appearances for Gli Azzurri, the Nigerian forward has already scored 41 goals and is only 26 goals away from beating the Argentine forward’s record.
It remains whether he can go past him and become one of the club’s top scorers of all time, but Osimhen’s current objective seems to be to replicate Maradona’s achievement and help Napoli win their first league title since 1990.
