Chelsea’s Premier League campaign keeps on going from bad to worse with every week and now Erling Haaland is threatening to embarrass them with his goal record. The Blues played their first game under their fourth manager of this season itself, with Frank Lampard losing his debut against Wolves on Saturday.
Lampard made a few changes to his team but opted to go with the same kind of tactics the players had operated in under Graham Potter or Bruno Saltor. They ended up suffering a damning 1-0 loss to the Wolves, thanks to a Matheus Nunes screamer.
Not just was the loss bad enough, but the game also marked their third successive league game without having scored a single goal.
Chelsea’s awful goal drought laid bare in Premier League
Chelsea have scored just 29 goals in 30 Premier League games so far this season. Only seven teams in the league have scored fewer than them, which includes the Wolves. The likes of relegation-threatened Leicester City, and Leeds United as well as midtable clubs like Fulham and Brentford have scored more goals than.
With just 29 goals from 30 games, the Blues have scored the fewest goal at this point of the campaign in any of their Premier League seasons yet. In fact, the last time they had this few goals in a league campaign was way back in the 1923-24 season!
Erling Haaland has more league goals than Chelsea
Not only did they suffer an embarrassing loss in their first match under Lampard against Wolves, but an even more humiliating reality dawned upon them later on Saturday night. Erling Haaland continued his insane goal spree for Manchester City and scored another brace in their 4-1 win over Southampton – which included an overhead kick!
In doing so, Haaland took his tally of Premier League goals to 30 for the season so far. That means Haaland has actually scored more goals in his debut campaign with the Citizens in the Premier League than Chelsea with their entire squad of players.
The Norwegian goal machine has scored a whopping 44 goals in all competitions for City this season. He’s leading both the Premier League leading goal-scorer charts as well as the European golden boot race very comfortably.
Not just that, but Haaland is also eyeing the potential to break more records. He’s just five goals away from beating Alan Shearer’s record for most goals in a single Premier League season (34).
Haaland is also just one goal away from setting the record for most goals scored by a player across all competitions for a single Premier League club – being tied at 44 goals alongside Mo Salah (2017/18) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (2002/03).
The young City striker has recovered from small injury niggles and seems set to feature in their nine remaining league games – winning which will see the Citizens pip Arsenal to the Premier League title.
Haaland has already created an embarrassing situation for a club like Chelsea by scoring more league goals than their entire squad this season, despite having played two games fewer than them.
Seeing the rate at which Haaland is scoring and surging his way to breaking all Premier League records, Chelsea will really have to start scoring a lot more goals to ensure the Norwegian can’t end the campaign with more league goals than them.
