Diego Maradona’s legacy is ingrained in Naples’ history and culture. From a local kid on the streets of Italy’s southern part to the stars of Napoli, everyone always tries to pay tribute – in one way or another – to the great Argentine.
This time it was Napoli‘s superstar Victor Osimhen‘s turn.
The Nigerian superstar, who registered his name in the club’s history books by leading the Gli Azzurri’s to the title – their first since Maradona’s memorable playing days of the 1990s – paid homage to the late forward by rocking his iconic Number 10 shirt.
All about Osimhen’s Maradona Kit
The 24-year-old is currently spending his off-season resting in Lagos, Nigeria. But made sure to let know fans in Naples that the club is still in his mind by sharing a photo of himself wearing the Blues’ 1987/88 kit on social media with a caption: “Different Kind Of Days But Same GOD🙏🏽💯”.
The shirt is remembered for Maradona’s historic campaign that saw the club win their first of the three Serie A titles.
The connection with such an important season has made the kit one of the favourites amongst the fanbase. However, even on its own, the design is so clean and flawless that it’s treasured by everyone who admires retro tops.
The base white colour, BuiToni sponsor on the forefront, and Nicola Raccuglia’s NR logo give the shirt a pristine look.
However, it appears Osimhen’s kit was inspired by the 87/88 rather than being a replica, as it was without the iconic blue line on the collar. Instead, the dynamic striker enhanced his look with a gold chain around his neck.
Osimhen certainly knows how to win over Partenopei fans, whether it be with his crucial goals in Stadio Diego Armando Maradona or his retro kits that take the fans back in time.
With his 26 goals during the 2022/23 season, he’s certainly going to remain in their hearts for a long time.
An example of that was seen in May when the Nigeria international earned his mural spot on the walls in downtown Naples alongside Maradona.
It’s impossible to usurp Maradona’s achievements in this city, but Osimhen can cement his place as the second-best if can help Napoli win another league title. For that though he’d need to reject transfer approaches from the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea.
Twitter user @RatioTko thinks the player’s decision to flaunt Maradona’s retro kit is a hint that he wants to continue playing for the club in his bid to surpass the legend’s legacy.
While a Nigerian fan wasn’t best pleased with his decision. It seems he hasn’t forgotten Maradona’s ‘middle finger’ to the Super Eagles during Argentina’s win over the country in the 2018 World Cup group stage.
But as far as Napoli fans are concerned, the love for Maradona transcends international loyalties. Osimhen in a Maradona shirt is all they are going to see and admire for the next few days!
