Embarrassing: Gen Next fails to recognise German great in FC 24 cover

FC 24, Rudi Voller

It’s said that people’s memory is short and sometimes they fail to recognise even established names.

Take the case of the cover of ultimate edition of the of FC 24, that features a phalanx of players to have graced the beautiful game over a period of time

The much-awaited release date for the football gaming series is likely to be in September, but the cover and the trailer is already out.

And as expected, the trendy cover has an all-star look as it features 31 past and present stars, World Cup winners and legends including Pele, Johan Cruyff, Rudi Voller, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldinho, David Beckham, the current lost comprising, Vinicius Junior Erling and Erling Haaland and the icon of women’s football – Marta.

Instead of real-life images of the players, each are shown via in-game renders, but what surprised everyone, if one goes by the comments on social media is the fact that many of them have failed to recognise German great Voller with some even mistaking him for Dutch legend Frank Rijkaard.

The 1990 World Cup-winner, who is currently serving as the director of the Die Mannschaft was a livewire during his playing days.

After hanging up his boots, he had served as German national team manager and later as the sporting director of Bundelisga club Bayer Leverkusen.

Known for his thick curly hair and agility on the ground, Voller was part of a golden generation of a German team which played three World Cup finals in a row from 1982 (four overall) culminating in their triumph in 1990 Italia.

In the 1986 World Cup final in Mexico, Voller helped Germany crawl their way back into the game with an 81st minute equaliser, but ended up on the losing side as Argentina won 3-2 in a World Cup remembered more for the late Diego Maradona’s brilliance.

Voller, who coached Germany to the 2002 World Cup final, where they lost to Brazil, also has the rare honour of reaching the World final both as a player and a manager.

It is quite baffling to see that many of the modern-day football buffs could not recognise a player of such stature in FC 24 cover.

The trailer, narrated by British actor Daniel Kaluuya, features pre-rendered footage of men’s and women’s football stars of past and present interacting with each other in locker rooms and a tunnel.

Some die-hard footballs vented their ire at the total ignorance of the Gen Next by coming up comments like, “Rudi Voller, The world knows him!

The FC 24 is the revamped version of the popular FIFA video game series and players who acquire the Ultimate Edition will enjoy seven days of early access to the game.

The FC 24 cover was released by Electronic Arts (EA) Sports, which is a subsidiary of Electronic Arts who specialise in the development and distribution of sports-themed video games.

Though the new gen missed out on recognising Voller, there were still some who were more bothered about Lionel Messi and Cristiano Rolando being left out from the cover.
