Paul Dummett has seen it all in his 13 years at Newcastle United. He has played with them in their poor years in the Premier League, gotten relegated to the Championship and then promoted back to the top division as well.
Being one of the most experienced figures in the squad, Dummett has also earned interesting chants from the fans.
Dummett is no longer a regular in the Newcastle squad. However, he has readily accepted a squad role under Eddie Howe and has only made one appearance this season.
With that being said, the performance itself was a really top one in their win over Manchester City in the Carabao Cup third round.
The 30-year-old excelled in his first appearance of the campaign, keeping the dangerous City attackers quiet to help his side get a clean sheet and the win.
He troubled the forwards with his aggressive style and ability to win aerial battles as well as make important clearances.
Dummett’s performances also impressed the St. James Park faithful so much so that they also brought back an old chant for the Welshman. The chant was created quite a few years ago after the Newcastle United youth academy graduate started to excel for his club.
The chant goes something like this: “He’s a Geordie, He Only Cost £2.40, And We Think He’s F****** Naughty, It’s Paul Dummett”.
The chant actually makes a few cheeky references to Dummett’s history with the Magpies.
He actually joined the Newcastle United academy back in 2000 as a nine-year-old (with the club not having to pay anything for it hence the £2.40 reference) – spending a decade at that level before getting his break at the senior level.
After short loan spells at National League side Gateshead and Scottish top division club St. Mirren, he has been a part of the Newcastle side for the last 10 seasons.
Of course, he hasn’t exactly been able to maintain his regular place in the starting lineup and sees the likes of Sven Botman, Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles all above him in the pecking order.
Despite that, the 30-year-old has remained at the Magpies due to his loyalty to the club and has gotten this hilarious little chant that Dummett himself doesn’t seem to mind at all.
Besides the one mentioned above, Dummett also gets sung a version of the super popular ‘he’s one of our own’ chant.
Though, hearing football fans sing his name positively isn’t something Dummett is used to.
Back in 2018, Dummett admitted to being surprised: “It was weird. Normally people shout ‘Dummett, you’re shite’.”
These chants also aren’t the only ones that Newcastle faithful have come up for him as a reward for his loyalty and dedication towards the club.
Mick C, a well-known Newcastle United fanatic who loves making songs about his side’s players, had created a catchy little song for Dummett as well a few years ago.
The song which is basically called the ‘Dummett song’ is one where a lot of love is poured onto the Welsh centre-back.
Dummett has become almost like a cult hero in this current Newcastle United squad. He might not be as skilful as Sandro Tonali or as technical as Sven Botman, but the 30-year-old’s dedication to the Magpies is unmatched and one which will help him keep a legendary reputation among the fans.
