Dominik Szoboszlai has taken little time to become a hero for Liverpool fans. He’s only been at the club for a few months, but his explosive performances have made him a beloved figure.
The Hungarian midfielder has proven to be the Reds’ ‘X Factor’, helping energize the team after a lackluster last season.
Szoboszlai has been impressing Jurgen Klopp since the pre-season campaign. It started with him topping the dreaded lactate test. The midfielder would then bring his training form to the matches. He’s been a midfield maverick and impressed with his surprising speed too.
The 22-year-old has only scored two goals so far, but his energetic performances and positive playing style are winning over fans. They’ve already started to create brand new chants for him.
While Liverpool fans are in love with their new Hungarian hero, the rival fans are (obviously) not as happy about his success. In the current age of social media, it’s almost like the job of fans to bring down their rival teams’ players. They try to do so by criticizing the tiniest of mistakes and magnifying some flaws in their performances.
Now some, rival supporters have seemingly created a brand new ‘nickname’ for the Hungarian midfielder. This is more of a slander name than anything else. Some fans are now calling him ‘Szopongebob’ to mock him. This is definitely the weirdest slander name that Football Twitter has created.
Of course, fans are trying to mock him by referring him to as Spongebob Squarepants. The titular character from the popular Nickelodeon show is a sponge-fish that is a cook in a fictional underwater place named ‘Bikini Bottom’. Some fans seem to have seen something in Szoboszlai that reminds them of Spongebob.
Now, slander names aren’t exactly unusual in Football Twitter either. Kylian Mbappe has been known as Mpaypal for awhile now. Even Leo Messi, called by his haters as ‘Pessi’ for his penalty goals, isn’t spared of slander names.
Some rival fans seem to be loving the name ‘Szpongebob’. It has given them new material to mock the Hungarian midfielder and try to demean him every time he makes the slightest error.
The slander name was seemingly created after Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea. But its relevance has mellowed down ever since. The reason behind that is Szoboszlai’s form after that game. The 22-year-old midfielder has exploded into the scene after his shaky Premier League debut. He’s been able to drop one amazing performance after another, keeping his doubters quiet.
As a result, he’s also ensured that the Szopongebob nickname refuses to stick. Rivals fans just can’t find enough material or cause to mock him anymore. As a result, these slander name has been shoved under the carpet and failed to go viral.
Szoboszlai’s consistency has been one of the most impressive things about his Liverpool career so far. He’ll aim to maintain that admirable aspect of his game to not just keep doubters quiet, but also to guide the Reds to major trophies this season.
