Curtis Jones has had a bit of a chaotic start to the 2023/24 season for Liverpool amid added competition in midfield with the acquisition of multiple players. He has put in some energetic displays but was unfortunate to be controversially sent off in his side’s 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
But the Englishman is not the type of character to sulk or let himself go down the pecking order. He has worked hard to make himself an important squad member for Jurgen Klopp and is Liverpool through and through. He joined the club’s academy as a nine-year-old and has spent the last 13 years at the club.
As a result, Jones is desperate to make it big at Anfield. He is biding his time to become a first-team regular under Klopp, but has shown enough improvement over the last few seasons to warrant more game-time going forward. The 22-year-old is also confident of his team’s quality and how they can not only compete for major titles, but also oust any team on their best day.
He spoke about this recently in the We Are Liverpool podcast, saying: “When we play our best, there are not many teams that can get anywhere near us. And that is in terms of keeping the ball and if you want to turn it into a scrappy game to see if you want it more than us, I think that’s not going to happen!”
To his credit, Jones is not saying anything gibberish with his analysis of how powerful Liverpool can really be at their very best. The Reds have a team full of world-class talents and experienced internationals who can become very difficult to outwit when they are flying high on momentum.
The Englishman has received a lot of praise from Liverpool fans with his comments, and how passionate he seems to be while saying it too. In the end, Jones is himself a Liverpool supporter since his childhood and his opinions resonate with millions of the Reds’ supporters from around the world.
Jones is also being advocated by a lot of Liverpool fans to actually start their upcoming crucial Premier League clash against Manchester City. There is a feeling that he can add the perfect balance to their midfield alongside Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szobozlai. The 22-year-old’s energetic nature, ball-winning ability and extra legs in midfield can help Liverpool press the opposition players efficiently win back possession in key areas.
With that being said, while a lot of Reds faithful love Jones for his comments, his bold take has garnered attention from rival fans too. In fact, the tweets of his comments are already being heavily bookmarked on Twitter by the opposition fans. This is mostly so that if Liverpool ends up suffering a bad loss to City at the weekend, those fans can mock the 22-year-old for his comments by resurfacing these clips.
Jones isn’t the type of player to get rattled by what opposition fans have to say about him or Liverpool. But he is the kind of confident, hard-working player that Klopp wants to grow into a key player in his squad and one he hopes will help give the Reds an edge in their upcoming clash against the defending champions.
