The Premier League Player of the Month awards are normally given to the most impactful player of the month. Recently, Harry Maguire won the Player of the Month award for November after his rock-solid performances for Manchester United.
But the happiness of the award didn’t exactly stay as long for Maguire. People on Twitter have sparked questions after Maguire won the award.
While no one is questioning the fact that he has improved his game, critics and fans are asking how Maguire won over so many other deserving players.
Sarcastic accounts posted a picture of Maguire and Manchester City midfielder, Kevin De Bruyne making everyone realize that the Belgian hasn’t won a single Player of the Month award.
De Bruyne is arguably one of the greatest players in the Premier League, but the fact that he hasn’t won a single Player of the Month award is shocking to fans.
This season itself, apart from Maguire, the likes of Mo Salah, Erling Haaland and Son Heung-Min have won the award and De Bruyne is no downgrade from them either. Kevin De Bruyne’s stats prove his worth. But unfortunately, that honour of an award hasn’t been claimed yet.
What makes his snubs from these monthly awards so frustrating is that De Bruyne has won the Premier League Player of the Season award twice, yet the monthly award has slipped slowly from him. He had come close to winning it before but not yet.
Kevin De Bruyne is a brilliant player, who can play all sorts of styles and moves with his game. Whether it’s to cut through the defence with a through pass or take a great shot from outside the box. He can dribble, give assists and more on a consistent basis. He’s like a Belgian Harry Kane.
Not to mention how important De Bruyne is for Manchester City and its attack. City have a good squad and be it with or without De Bruyne, they will win games. But they do miss the presence and the vision, De Bruyne.
He has been playing in the Premier League for over 10 years and not being able to win Player of the Month is criminal.
One thing that must be noted is that the Premier League Player of the Month award is a fan-vote-based one. Hence, the player who gets the most fan votes wins it. With Manchester City still lacking that gigantic fanbase on social media, that is probably a reason why De Bruyne keeps missing out on it.
Fans took to Twitter to say, “Football is a weird sport” and “Maguire is really doing well but KDB is a Goat 🐐”. Some joked football is a scam just because of this unfair treatment by the league. Some have accused the league of giving way too much credit because they are English players and that they get all the accolades, while foreign players have to work twice as hard.
A proper recognition of Kevin De Bruyne is due and when he returns from his injury, he’ll hope to break his weird duck with the Premier League Player of the Month award and finally win one such award.
