Liverpool fans are still reeling from the bombshell dropped by Jurgen Klopp that he would be vacating his role as the club’s first-team manager at the end of the 2023/24 season.
For many fans, the prospect of someone like Klopp – who has helped them win every single major trophy since taking over in 2015 – resigning is almost as grave as the death of a relative.
However, football waits for nobody and Liverpool have survived the departure of iconic figures like Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley in the past.
They will now be in the chase to find a manager suited to carry on the legacy that Klopp will leave at the club at the end of the season.
The majority of Liverpool fans seem to feel that the ideal replacement for the German manager will be Bayer Leverkusen boss and their former player, Xabi Alonso.
The Spaniard is doing a fabulous job with the German side, who are on top of the Bundesliga table and have – so far – outperformed Bayern Munich in the division.
Leverkusen also plays a style of exciting, relentless attacking football that Liverpool fans have gotten used to under Klopp.
That is why the entire Liverpool FC fraternity, including former players, feel that Alonso is THE heir to Klopp.
The Spanish midfielder’s former teammate, Didi Hamann, had made a rather interesting prediction over what would happen if Liverpool really pushed to appoint Alonso as their new manager.
He told The Stand With Eamon Dunphy podcast: “I think if Liverpool come calling, I think it’s very hard to turn down, even though he follows in Klopp’s footsteps. But the thing is, sometimes the big clubs, they only come once. If somebody comes in in the summer and does well, the job might not be on offer for five or six years, or maybe nine years if they find another Klopp. So, I think if Liverpool come calling, I think he’ll take it.”
With that being said, it appears that some Liverpool fans are a bit overly excited about the prospect of Alonso taking over the club as the new manager.
This includes the Thailand Liverpool fans fraternity, who are being duped by a new scam that involves Xabi Alonso.
Thailand police have warned Liverpool fans in the country to be aware of a new scam viral message that shows a picture of Alonso ‘confirming’ that he will become the new Liverpool manager but asking for 300 baht ($8.50) in helping him pay a plane ticket to Merseyside.
The scam message reads something like this ‘I am Xabi Alonso, I will be in charge of Liverpool next season, but I am short of money for my flights to Liverpool,’ written in Thai.
Of course, this is a rather obvious scam but knowing how obsessed some football fans are, they might fall for the trick.
For one, Alonso is a well-paid manager at Leverkusen and even if Liverpool want to bring him to England to start his role as their new manager, they’d never ask him to book his own flight ticket.
With that being said, Alonso has recently reiterated that he is not thinking about his future as potential Liverpool manager and is totally focused on helping Leverkusen win the Bundesliga title this season.
