It has not been an easy season for FC Barcelona. They’re way off the table-topping Real Madrid in LaLiga, are out of the Copa del Rey, and have tough ask ahead of them in the Champions League, with their manager and club legend Xavi all but set to leave come the end of the season.
Inevitably, tensions have been rising in Catalonia and spilling over to the players. One such incident occurred recently outside the club’s Joan Gamper training complex, when Barça defender Iñigo Martínez was accosted by a bunch of what looked like Blaugrana supporters.
You can watch the incident here:
The 32-year-old Basque defender only moved to the club from Athletic Bilbao last summer but has found life tough in Catalonia, having made just 19 appearances across all competitions and failed to impress, becoming an easy target for the fans’ ire.
In the above incident, things having seemingly gone too far, Martínez can be scene confronting one of the hecklers, having reportedly said: “It’s the last time you call me stupid, the last. The last time you insult me. And your friend the same. Have you heard or not? The last. And don’t be cocky.”
Of course, there’s a worrisome element to this development, as human safety is at danger on both ends here. Thankfully, the matter remained limited to words. Subsequently, however, some Barça fans went sleuthing and discovered that the person Martínez confronts in the clip is not a Culer at all.
To add salt to the wounds, soon a discovery was made that the same fan attended Gavi‘s presentation in a Real Madrid kit.
Indeed, the person seems to be a fan of Los Blancos and even has a picture on his socials with their English star Jude Bellingham.
Many on social media have been quick to resort to vitriol for the young Madridista, though it is important to keep in mind that things don’t go too far in the name of fan banter.
Let us know what you make of the incident.
