Just like Wayne Rooney had his breakthrough on the world stage 20 years ago on the stage of Euro, England has another breakout star this year in Marc Guehi. At 24, Guehi turned out one of the stone walls in the English defence in the absence of Harry Maguire.
Gareth Southgate masterclasses have somehow managed to pull England to the last eight of the tournament, even at the expense of putting the fans to sleep. But the clean sheets came due to the pragmatic approach and Marc Guehi played his part. With 2 clean sheets in 4 starts and an assist to boast about, it’s only fitting that the fans have something special about the 5’11” centre-back.
And social media has continued to do the thankless job of pulling another rabbit out of its hat to produce a chant for the Guehi. Posted by the X handle, Spurs Song Sheets, the chant would be instantly recognisable to Liverpool fans, but more on that later.
The chant derives from The Real Thing’s song, “You to Me Are Everything”. The chant goes something like this:
You to me are everything,
You’re taking England to Berlin,
Marc Guehi, Marc Guehi
And when you play with Jonny Stones,
I’m sure that football’s coming home,
Marc Guehi, Marc Guehi!!!
The original song was also used in Jurgen Klopp‘s farewell video posted by Liverpool’s official social media team. The band originates from Liverpool, and they rejuvenated the musical culture of the area in the ’70s.
Now, after decades, it has again become mainstream thanks to social media and Marc Guehi absolutely loved it. In a recent video uploaded by the England national team’s X handle, Guehi is seen listening to the song. He also reacted to the chant and said, ‘Humbling, humbling. Never had my own song before. So, yeah, for this to be out there, fans to be singing this is, yes, unbelievable, to be honest, but very, very humbling.’
‘You don’t usually get people singing your name. You do your job and then you move on, but to be getting some appreciation is very, very, very, very nice and just a great feeling, to be honest. I’m glad.’
The chant is already viral on social media, with Palace also acknowledging the chant. And English fans do love their chants. Just like every tournament or friendlies, the Three Lions fans have been vocal in their support with an arsenal of chants to last the 90 minutes.
This year’s edition saw Jude Bellingham‘s ‘Hey Jude’ and Phil Foden‘s ‘Phil Foden’s on fire’ chants being added to the catalogue of chants. With Guehi’s chant in line for being inducted into the English chants club, all ears would be on England’s next game.
