Cole Palmer and Virgil van Dijk’s achievements from the 2023/24 season were celebrated in a big way at the 2024 PFA (Professional Footballers Association) Awards.
The Chelsea star won the Young Player of the Year award for his amazing debut season with the Blues. Van Dijk was named in the PFA Team of the Year, marking his fourth time in this line-up.
With these award shows being inspired by events like the Oscars or Emmys, there is a ‘red carpet’ event before the event where photographers are allowed to capture snaps of the footballers and those who accompany them (mostly their partners).
Palmer and Van Dijk both decided to wear a pair of unique suits for the occasion. Upon his entry to the red carpet, the cameras caught the Chelsea winger what appears to be an oversized suit of sorts.
That is because the formal wear doesn’t seem to fit him that properly and almost makes it look like he ordered one size bigger or something.
Palmer could be seen walking very sheepishly on the red carpet, which gives it away that he probably hasn’t worn suits that many times in his life.
He seemed to be struggling to carry all the ‘weight’ that comes with the heavy clothes, and his entire posture also comes off as extremely awkward wearing this formal attire.
Some fans have mocked Palmer’s decision to wear this extra-large suit by claiming that this is the first time ever wore a suit in his life.
The Englishman has even been ridiculed for being ‘auraless’ off the field despite having a ‘cold celebration’ after scoring goals. Supporters have even pointed out at how his awkwardness just stands out in his activities in the red carpet.
Van Dijk also arrived at the 2024 PFA awards with his wife Rike for this prominent occasion.
What is particularly surprising about his entire get-up is that the Liverpool captain is actually quite the fashionable person who has acted as a model for many luxury fashion brands across his career. Irrespective of that, he opted to wear a similarly strange suit like Palmer.
In the pictures where he’s posing with the PFA award, Van Dijk’s baggy suit really pops up on the screen. His pants look much bigger than what he should be wearing and not really the ‘regular fit’ kind either.
Some fans have even taken a dig at how he didn’t get his black trousers tailored or ironed properly because of how scruffy they look.
Even Van Dijk’s suit comes off as something originally made for a much bulkier person and perhaps a size bigger than what will fit him perfectly. Some fans have hilariously claimed that the Liverpool defender probably wore his dad’s suit because of how large it is.
Liverpool fans have even urged the club to hand the Dutchman a brand new contract to allow him to invest in a new suit that will fit him much better.
One thing that is guaranteed is that top-level Premier League footballers need to invest more in finding better tailors. This ‘baggy suit’ experiment definitely didn’t work for Palmer or Van Dijk, and they’ll probably learn to wear formal attires that fit to their skin perfectly before attending such events.
