Brentford have added some much-needed firepower to their frontline with the acquisition of exciting Brazilian winger Gustavo Nunes.
With Ivan Toney looking set to leave for Saudi Arabia, Thomas Frank’s side have roped in the teenage sensation for £10 million from Gremio to add more unpredictability to their attacking line.
Nunes had 11 goal contributions (seven goals, four assists) in 40 senior appearances for Gremio and is known for being a skilful, exciting forward.
But he doesn’t really seem to be that enlightened on Brentford strictly being a mid-table Premier League side whose major objective is to stay alive in the Premier League as well as produce a few shocks here and then.
In his first interview with the club, Nunes made a surprising statement of intent as he said: “I am really looking forward to playing in the Premier League. It has always been my dream to play in this league, so I have the pleasure of joining this competition.
“Brentford was the first club to make an offer. I had a really good conversation with representatives and it was the club I chose. It is an incredible feeling. I am glad to be here in such a HUGE club and I hope to win many titles.’
While his initial generic comments are what you expect from a new signing, fans have been taken aback by him signifying desire to win titles at Brentford.
The Bees have not won a competitive trophy since 2011, when they last won the Football League Trophy. They last won a league title (League Two) in 2008/09. The highest they’ve managed to finish in the British top division’s table was their fifth-place finish in the 1934/35 season.
Safe to say that Brentford are not the club who competes for trophies or even aspires to win major silverware in their campaign.
They’re more focused on reserving their place in the top flight and being financially profitable than winning trophies, which is aspired by the major Premier League sides. That is why Nunes’ bold comments have come off as even more hilarious and sparked a range of wild memes on social media.
Some Brentford fans themselves are stunned and amused that Nunes would voice his desire to win titles with them.
One supporter used the popular The Incredibles meme showing the bright and ‘dark’ side of Mr Incredible, indicating that Nunes is for a shocker when he finds out Brentford don’t compete for major titles.
Another person hinted that he might’ve confused Brentford for a Manchester club based on the bee on their club badge.
This is a reference to the popular Manchester Bee symbol has been an emblem of the city for over 150 years and signifies the hard work ethic of Mancunians.
The 18-year-old will be itching to take the Premier League by storm by using his blistering pace and trickery to torment defenders, but he shouldn’t expect to be competing for any titles during his stint at a hard-working, pragmatic side like Brentford.
