Amanda Staveley became a well-known figure among Premier League fans in 2021 when she lead the Saudi Arabia Investment Fund’s takeover of Newcastle United. As a result, she was inserted as a director of the Magpies’ new set-up and was actively involved in looking into the management structure of Newcastle United.
But earlier this year, Staveley decided to leave role as Newcastle United director to pursue other ventures. A few months after leaving her role at Newcastle, Amanda has gotten people talking by popping up at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium recently.
Staveley was apparently in the Spurs’ stadium for the National Football League (NFL) match between the Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets.
But Staveley was actually pictured inside the ground at the NFL match between the Chicago Bears and the Jacksonville Jaguars on 13 October. A 61,000+ crowd flocked the stadium to watch this match, and Staveley was also present in the VIP box.
Is Amanda Staveley Eyeing a $500 Million Investment in Tottenham?
There have been reports swirling in recent weeks that Staveley has held talks to acquire a sizeable ownership stake in Tottenham from co-owner Joe Lewis that would see her invest £500m in the club.
The fact that she was seen attending this match at Spurs’ stadium right in the midst of the rumours fired up the speculation that she might be close to acquiring the stake.
Staveley, of course, has strong ties to investors in Saudi Arabia or Qatar as she helped broke the Saudi Arabia investment in Newcastle and her PCP Capital also helped to bring in Qatar and Abu Dhabi investments into the Barclays bank in 2008.
Earlier in April 2024, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy had hinted that the club are open to having new investors to put in more money into the club. He had stated that the club was looking to ‘capitalise on our long-term potential, to continue to invest in the teams and undertake future capital projects.’
Her continued presence
Football London journalist Alasdair Gold, who has been praised as very reliable for Tottenham Hotspur news, recently reacted to Staveley’s presence in Spurs stadium and explained: “She’s been at a Spurs home game (earlier this season), she’s been at both the NFL games. If she can bring in the finance to get a minority stake at Spurs, she’s someone who can set up the deal and broker the deal.”
“She doesn’t have all that money, but she can be at the face of it. Fascinated to see the dynamic with her and Daniel Levy. He’s a hands-on guy who works behind the scene and Staveley is someone who really likes to be involved, perhaps a bit too involved.
“How is he going to take in when someone else comes in with a minority stake maybe want things to stake. But if they have a minority stake, how’s that going to be taken? Will someone coming in feel they can have enough stake? We’ll see what happens, spurs are being very quiet on it. They have been with any investment issues, they’ve not said it’s not going happen or it is. But her continued presence, you would maybe guess would be linked towards something there. Whether it’s a case of someone turning up at matches, we’ll see.”
It’s possible
Staveley gave a rather diplomatic answer when asked about the Spurs links in an interview with The Athletic in July.
She stated: “My preference would have been to stay with Newcastle, but life doesn’t always work out exactly how you want it to.”
“Mehrdad (her husband) and I are keen to be hands-on. We’re hard-working people; I love to be very busy and to engage, and I love football. Very sadly, we have to move on to other projects and that might involve us taking a stake in another club or buying another club, and that’s difficult. But it’s possible.”
