Gossip: Newcastle Shoot Their Shot But German Speedster Says Danke, But No Thanks

Bayern Munich, Bundesliga, Leroy Sane, Newcastle United, Premier League

Have you ever imagined Leroy Sane in Newcastle’s famous black-and-white stripes, dodging rain showers like they’re defenders at St. James’ Park? Picture this: Sane, with his trademark hair flapping in the wind like a confused seagull, sprints down the pitch while the Toon Army is bundled up in layers, sipping on pints, and trying to figure out if they should have a curry or a kebab for post-match snacks.

As he glides past defenders, the Geordie faithful erupt in cheers, wondering if they can convince him that their beloved city is not just famous for its football but also for its exquisite weather—aka, rain, more rain, and maybe a sprinkle of sunshine if they’re lucky! Imagine Sane whipping in crosses that are as unpredictable as the Newcastle climate: will it be a perfect assist or will it end up in the stands, landing smack in someone’s half-eaten pie?

And while the fans dream of him embracing the vibrant culture and questionable cuisine—because who wouldn’t want to swap fine dining for a plate of stottie cake?—recent reports suggest Sane may not be keen on making the move to Tyneside. But hey, let’s not dampen the fun just yet! Whether he sticks around in Bayern’s beer gardens or takes a leap into the Geordie lifestyle, one thing’s for sure: the Toon Army would roll out the welcome mat faster than you can say, ‘Howay the lads!

Leroy Sane scored 10 goals and registered 13 assists last season for Bayern; some would even argue that’s his best season for his club, just like Bayern’s director, who said the very same thing about the German. (stats by transfermarkt)

Sane was flying just 10 games into the season for his new club.

But after being in good form for Bayern last campaign, news surrounding the 28-year-old’s contract was bound to surface as it is due to expire very soon, as early as June 2025.

Things were initially calm, with Bayern Director Freund and Max Eberl both reiterating that they are patient in terms of Sane’s contract situation, with the club remaining in negotiations with the German throughout this time.

However, as reported by Christian Falk in early October, Sane still wishes to stay at the club, and he’s open to signing the contract to renew his stay. But, with the arrival of new summer signing Michael Olise from Crystal Palace, the German speedster fears proper first-team game time and thus remains open to other opportunities in other foreign leagues as well.

Around this time, a lot of rumors surfaced surrounding Sane’s potential exit with the German club, with reports of Barcelona, Manchester United, and other clubs across Europe being interested in the services of the winger. And quickly enough, it was around this time as well, when rumors around the mighty Newcastle United being interested in him came around.

Leroy Sane squashes Newcastle rumors – ‘Not an Option’

Football Insider a few weeks ago reported that Newcastle are highly optimistic of landing the German on a free basis. They believe with the economy of scale and resources they operate within, it would be realistic for them to secure the services of Sane, especially now that he could be signed for free.

And since then, his potential transfer to the Toon Army has been speculated across all social media forums. But it didn’t take long for Newcastle fans dreams to be shattered, as BILD from Germany reported that Sane believes that he’s at a higher level than what Newcastle United are at.

The German believes he is capable of showing his talent in the UEFA Champions League every week and thus wishes to play for a club that competes in the competition every season. He also wants to play for a team that challenges for the domestic league every year as well. Both of which Newcastle can’t offer Sane right now, after finishing 7th last campaign and missing out on European football.

To this, some Newcastle fans have had a salty reaction to this. Expressing the usual “club is bigger than player” sentiment and argument, to suggest, Sane is too egoistical for thinking he’s bigger than the Magpies for rejecting them, and he should well, pipe-down.

Other rival fans have meanwhile suggested that there’s nothing wrong with wanting the best and highest level for yourself, especially for someone like Sane who’s proved his worth both in the Premier League (winning the Premier League and other trophies) and with Bayern Munich (winning countless domestic leagues and trophies), at the highest level.

Leroy Sane is an accomplished player. The 28-year-old isn’t newbie to this game. He’s a seasoned professional who’s played under legendary managers and won numerous trophies. At the same time, Newcastle are also a big club, with ambitions and investment power capable of buying any footballer.

So, what’s it going to be? Will Newcastle push for Sane by offering more economical perks to the German with the help of their newly formed Saudi owners? Or has the speedster ended their dreams already, with reports coming in that he’s rejected the Toon Army? Whatever it is, one thing is for sure: Sane is going to have a lot of suitors waiting in the queue to buy him and let us tell you, the 28-year-old German wouldn’t mind that one bit.
