Time for another gameweek, time for another FPL riddle. The Spurs duo Son and Maddison, who did quite well last season and were hot favourites during the beginning of Fantasy Premier League 2024-25, are suddenly big question marks for GW21.
Let’s get straight into the harsh reality of life, football and everything in between. Tottenham captain Son, whose contract was recently extended by a year, is no more an inevitable choice in the Spurs lineup.
Same goes with Maddison. The Tottenham no.10 is also no longer a nailed-on starter for Ange’s setup.
Wait, what? This is beyond shocking! Yes, it is. But it is what it is. Ange didn’t hand starts to any of these star players in his side’s 1-2 defeat at the hands of Eddie Howe’s Newcastle.
No, there were no injury concerns. The Australian gaffer later described it to be a purely tactical move.
Hence, it raises the alarm bells. The price tag that these two Spurs superstars come with, doesn’t really allow to afford to see them coming from the bench.
Meanwhile, there is a pattern to this. In the first leg of the English League Cup semi final, Tottenham managed to edge past the mighty Liverpool, the current league leaders. However, Maddison was benched again. Though Son got a start this time.
Considering the problem of plenty in midfield, in this season’s FPL, I can fairly advise you to sell off Maddison and switch to some budget option like Kevin Schade or Jacob Murphy. Even Manchester United’s Amad Diallo, who recently extended his contract till 2030, seems a cool alternative. You may opt for Bruno Fernandes too. Amorim’s Manchester United are high on confidence after snatching a point from Liverpool away and they face bottom-placed Southampton next.
On the other hand, the Son saga is a bit complicated. He is one of the most proven assets in FPL and therefore, you should show some patience with Son.
Spurs face Arsenal next, indeed a difficult game. But they will have Leicester and Everton in the next two, both considered to be plum fixtures.
