Why Jorrel Hato Was at Anfield? Ajax Defender Sparks Liverpool Transfer Buzz

The sight of Ajax’s rising star Jorrel Hato at Anfield has set Liverpool fans abuzz with speculation. With the Reds still assessing their defensive options for the future as Van Dijk and Trent are yet to sort their future out, many supporters believe his presence during Liverpool’s 4-1 win over Ipswich Town could hint at an impending transfer.

Hato was among the 60,420 spectators at Anfield on Saturday as Liverpool eased their way to a 4-1 victory over Ipswich at home thanks to two goals from Cody Gakpo.

Fans spotted the youngster at the stadium and were quick to whip their phones out and grab a few pictures of the defender. The 18-year-old’s appearance was particularly eye-catching, given that Ajax had no fixtures over the weekend.

Fans quickly took to social media, making the assumption that his presence had to mean transfer speculation, as there could be no other reason for him to be attending a rather insignificant game against Ipswich.

One fan wrote: “Jorrel Hato at Anfield for a routine win against Ipswich? Something is definitely brewing. You don’t just turn up to these kinds of games unless there’s a reason.” Another pointed out the unusual nature of his visit: “It’s not normal for an Ajax player to be at an LFC game unless there’s some sort of talks happening. Can’t be a coincidence.”

At just 18 years old, Jorrel Hato has already established himself as a key figure in Ajax’s defense. Having made his senior debut in 2023, he has since racked up 92 appearances for the Dutch giants, operating both as a center-back and a left-back.

His playing style has drawn comparisons to Virgil van Dijk, with his composure on the ball, strong positional sense, and ability to carry the ball out of defense. Given Liverpool’s long-term need to find a successor for Van Dijk, Hato seems like a natural fit. He also could be the heir for Andy Robertson who turns 31 this year.

Former Ajax coach Heitinga once described Hato as “a leader beyond his years” and “a player who reads the game exceptionally well.”

Another video that fuels these rumors is an interaction between Hato and Van Dijk. While what’s been said can’t be heard, the two dap each other and exchange greetings, after which Hato has a star-struck sort of look on his face.

But unfortunately for Liverpool fans, the real reason why Hato was at Anfield is reportedly unrelated to transfer dealings. According to Dutch journalist Mike Verweij, Hato was simply in town on the invitation of Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.

Gravenberch, who made the switch from Bayern Munich to Liverpool last summer, shares a strong bond with Hato, and the timing of Ajax’s break allowed the young defender to make the trip.

Hato himself spoke about it, “I was invited by Ryan Gravenberch, I didn’t speak to a director there. Liverpool played well and the atmosphere in the stadium was good, but there is no more to say.”

Hato also reportedly spent time in Manchester, though he was not seen at City’s game against Chelsea later that evening.

Even though Hato’s visit may not signal an immediate move, Liverpool’s interest in him is very real. Verweij confirms that the club is monitoring him closely, though Real Madrid is also keeping tabs on his progress.

Hato remains under contract with Ajax until 2028, which complicates any potential move. The Dutch club is reportedly unwilling to part ways with their teenage sensation in January, but a figure of €30 million (£25.2m) has been suggested by Liverpool, competition from other top clubs may force them to dig deeper.

With Van Dijk’s future at Liverpool uncertain beyond his current contract, Hato remains a player to keep an eye on—whether for the summer or beyond.
