Double gameweeks are always exciting, as they spice things up with room for high ceilings. The first of the season is about to kick-off in a day’s time, with heated debates taking place across fantasy football communities over the best chip for GW24 — triple captain or the new assistant manager chip?
However, it seems that there are no dearth of options when it comes to triple captain choices for gameweek 24. And though defenders may not be the go-to FPL asset while playing the triple captain chip, they can be a great route to stack some extra points ahead of a double gameweek. Here are our top picks —
Trent Alexander-Arnold(£7.3m)
Liverpool is in fine form and Slot’s men would be eyeing to extend their lead even further when they face Everton and Bournemouth in gameweek 24. Trent Alexander-Arnold, who happens to be the most expensive defensive asset in the game, will be a handy pick ahead of the season’s first double gameweek.
TAA has been a widely celebrated asset in FPL over the years and carries a great attacking threat among defenders in the game. The fact that the England international also gets the opportunity to share set pieces, makes his stock even more appealing.
Liverpool has conceded the least number of goals in the league and TAA has registered two consecutive assists in the last two weekends. He has 1 goal and 6 assists from this campaign so far and carries an xGI of 0.39 per 90’.
Ibrahima Konate(£5.2m)
If your purse doesn’t allow you to afford TAA, then don’t think twice and go straight for the French central defender. Konate registered an assist against Ipswich last week and remains a nice differential with just 6.3% ownership.
He can be the cheapest yet one of the most steadiest routes to Slot’s defence. Konate may not be a similar attacking threat to Arnold but his one goal and two assists would suggest that along with clean sheets the Pool centre back can offer occasional attacking returns as a plus.
He costs way less than Virgil van Dijk(£6.4m) and has more goal involvements than the club captain.
Vitalii Mykolenko(£4.4m)
Everton faces table-toppers Liverpool and struggling Leicester City in double gameweek 24. They have won the last two games under David Moyes, the chosen one by Sir Alex Ferguson to replace him at Manchester United. And we could have easily opted for the veteran full-back Ashley Young, who played under Ferguson but has gone out of favour since Moyes’ reunion with the Merseyside club.
Mykolenko, who hails from the war-torn Ukraine, looks to be the cheapest way to the Everton defence, which has stood firm against stellar attacks this season. Vitalli appears a sure-shot starter and has seven clean sheets in his kitty.
Mykolenko doesn’t pose much attacking threat but has one assist to his name. The Ukraine international and his teammates will find it extremely difficult to contain Liverpool’s free-flowing attacking trio of Salah, Gakpo, and Diaz. But they should be okay with Leicester City. Moreover, both of their games would be played at home and Goodison Park remains Moyes’ old bastion.
