Lionel Messi was a star attraction at Super Bowl LIX held at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The Inter Miami star attended his first such event, watching the Philadelphia Eagles win the biggest NFL title with a win over the Kansas City Chiefs.
Messi was there with his sons Thiago, Mateo and Ciro, with the latter two even donning jerseys of Kansas City star Patrick Mahomes. He was also accompanied by his Inter Miami teammates Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba. The four ex-Barcelona players clearly got some of the best seats in the house, sitting in the VIP section.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner arrived at the venue dressed in a very casual manner. He represented Adidas with his attire, wearing an Adidas hoodie and track combo. But it was the Argentine sensation’s shoes that probably attracted the most attention among everything he wore for the event.
Messi decided to wear an unreleased edition of the Adidas Super 82 shoes for the event. These specialized shoes are going to be released as part of a collaboration between Adidas and the Argentine sensation. It’s similar to what the currently available Adidas Superstar 82 looks like with just minor tweaks.
The biggest ‘addition’ to the shoes that Messi is rocking here is that his name’s initials are present in the soon-to-be-released edition. The name ‘Messi’ can be seen prominently written in the side areas of this old-school trainers.
The shoes that Lionel is wearing are a pair of regular fit trainers with a leather upper and leather lining design. Another unique aspect of his personal Adidas Superstar 82 edition is that there are grey elements to the side patterns and in the back of the shoes.
Adidas have not yet revealed exactly when the Leo Messi edition of their Super 82 version will be released. However, they’re definitely piqued the interest of many fans by making him wear this at the Super Bowl, knowing that many photographers will invariably end up taking pictures of it.
Well, the Messi version of the Super 82 is definitely not going to be cheap. The current variations of the Adidas Super 82 is available on their online stores. It has been priced at £120. It can be argued that the Messi edition will cost at least double if not in the range of £500+ because it’ll be a limited edition one that has been approved by the FIFA World Cup winner himself.
Messi has been a major asset for the German brand ever since he switched from Nike to become an Adidas athlete in 2017. In that year, he decided to sign a lifetime contract with the European manufacturers to basically tie himself up with the brand for the entirety of his career.
Messi is reportedly going to be paid a whopping £788 million for his Adidas contract. The brand definitely wants a return on investment for that, which is why they’re heavily pushing them into their merchandise by releasing things like the Superstar 82 Lionel Messi edition.
The 37-year-old might not be playing in Europe anymore, but he remains an extremely marketable footballer. Adidas will probably now look to cash in on the hype for the shoes Leo wore at the Super Bowl by soon releasing it and raking up an impressive return on the product.
