Ragnar Klavan might not be the first name that comes to mind when discussing Liverpool greats, but the Estonian defender earned a cult following during his time at Anfield.
But how does his loyalty towards the Reds translate to a “Klavan for President” banner that was spotted outside the entry gates prior to Liverpool’s clash against Newcastle?
This comes in support from Klavan after he announced his candidacy for the presidency of the Estonian Football Association (EJL) in December 2024.
In the image taken and posted online, one fan humorously noted that a man holding a clipboard near the banner looked like he was signing people up for Klavan’s campaign.
Having retired from professional football in 2024, the former center-back set his sights on reforming Estonian football.
His campaign is built on the idea of unlocking the nation’s footballing potential, improving economic success, and modernizing the structure of the sport.
Klavan’s main rival in the election is Aivar Pohlak, the long-serving incumbent who has held the position for five terms. Pohlak has emphasized his deep understanding of Estonian football’s complexities, particularly in balancing club interests and commercial priorities.
When asked about how he feels about Klavan competing and how he considers his candidature, he said “Serious”, adding that he knew where his strengths lie.
For Klavan, however, the race represents a new era for Estonian football. His time on the EJL board gave him insight into what needs to change, and his campaign is centered on collaboration and innovation.
Klavan has secured the votes needed to run for FA presidency and the elections will take place in spring 2025, with the exact date to be announced by the Board of the Estonian Football Association at least 90 days before the general assembly.
