Liverpool are aware of their need to constantly upgrade their squad with high-quality players to remain as favorites for the Premier League and/or UEFA Champions League titles for years to come.
That is why they have been looking into improving their frontline, and a player they really admire for that is Real Madrid winger Rodrygo.
Rodrygo showcased his quality under the UEFA Champions League lights by starring in Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid.
The Brazilian winger bamboozled defender Javi Galan to score a stunning opening goal, helping his side take an advantage in the first leg of the Round of 16 clash.
The 24-year-old’s impressive form and tendency for something ‘special’ has piqued Liverpool’s interest.
That is because it’s been confirmed by Cadena SER that the Reds are among monitoring his situation at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Liverpool have also reportedly had preliminary talks with Real Madrid, in which they asked him about Rodrygo’s transfer available in 2024.
Now, Spanish outlet Fichajes claims that Real Madrid could be ready to cash in on Rodrygo’s sale in the 2025 summer window.
They claim of Real Madrid being impressed by Saudi Arabia clubs being willing to offer as much as £166 million for his signing.
It has even been reported earlier this season that Liverpool might have to pay above the £100 million mark to sign Rodrygo.
Liverpool legend Danny Murphy has also urged his former side to sign Rodrygo if Mohamed Salah ends up leaving.
The Egyptian winger’s contract expires at the end of June, 2025 and there’s a serious chance he departs on a free transfer.
Murphy believes the Brazilian winger can be an ideal Salah replacement, stating: “If Liverpool wanted one player to replace Mohamed Salah, the obvious choice for me would be Rodrygo from Real Madrid. I think he’s a wonderful talent. His numbers aren’t like Salah’s but he’s a match winner. He can beat people, he’s quick, he’s playing in an environment where he’s playing under huge pressure every week and dealing with it.”
Rodrygo has 13 goals and eight assists for Real Madrid this season. It’s not as impressive as Salah’s (over 50 goal contributions), but the Brazilian has proven himself as a clutch, big-game player.
He has 25 goals in the UEFA Champions League for Real Madrid, becoming only their fifth player in history to reach that feat. He’s also the fifth youngest player in history to reach 25 Champions League goals.
I almost joined Liverpool in 2017, the deal was done for €3m. It collapsed because I said no. I wanted to stay at Santos, make history, finish my studies and then leave… even though the offer from Liverpool was very good.
The 24-year-old had revealed in an interview last year that he rejected a switch to Liverpool in 2017, claiming he could’ve finished his studies in English while playing for the heavyweights.
The Reds will probably face an equally tough task in convincing Rodrygo to leave Real Madrid to join them, irrespective of the financial demands required.
