Saudi Swoop or Simeone Calling: Nunez Faces Uncertain Liverpool Future

Darwin Nunez, Liverpool

£64 million (€75 million), that’s how much Liverpool paid to sign the 2021/22 Primeira Liga top scorer, Darwin Nunez from Benfica.

This is the Uruguayan’s third season at Merseyside, but his numbers suggest he is yet to justify his hefty price tag.

With Liverpool already rejecting a deal from Saudi Arabia during the January transfer window, there is still speculation on his future, ever since Arne Slot’s arrival at Anfield.

Under the new Dutch Boss, Nunez has been primarily used as an impact sub to cause chaos in the final minutes of the games, something he’s good at.

However, with reports suggesting Liverpool are targeting a new forward in the summer, this season could very well be the 25-year-old’s last in the top flight of English Football.

This season, the forward has registered just six goals and five assists in 36 appearances, and in the 132 games for Liverpool, he has found the net only 39 times, a return that falls short of expectations of a record signing.

As per El Nacional, Nunez has decided to leave the club this summer, with Spanish giants, Atletico Madrid showing interest in the forward.

Nunez’s blistering pace fits perfectly into Diego Simeone’s high-intensity attacking system, and he could follow the growing trend of Premier League players finding success abroad.

Meanwhile, reports suggest Liverpool are also considering a swap deal for Newcastle’s Isak, along with an additional transfer fee.

As the transfer window approaches, only time will tell how these moves unfold. And of course, we cannot rule out the possibility of Saudi Arabian clubs as well.
