Meet Jack Gillbanks, The Singer Behind Catchy Szboszlai and Endo Chants at The Albert Pub

Liverpool

Liverpool fans are having a blast getting ready to lift their 20th Premier League title. With their 2-0 win over Newcastle United, the Reds have now gone 13 points clear of second-place Arsenal in the title race.

Unless a catastrophic breakdown happens (unlikely), Liverpool are en route to clinch the title in April or May (2025). The Liverpool supporters are already in a party mood as the championship is now in the horizon. The atmosphere in the Albert Pub beside Anfield, for one, is absolutely rocking.

For those unknowing, the Albert is a pub that is situated close beside the Liverpool stadium. This was actually known as the Albert Hotel, which was founded in 1890 – two years before the Liverpool Football club was founded.

This pub becomes the ultimate gathering place for match-going fans during Liverpool match days. Even those supporters unable to get into Anfield, they turn up in the pub to enjoy a delightful experience with fellow fans and try to create a similar rocking atmosphere by singing chants and having a blast.

If one was to visit the Albert Pub on matchdays, it’s highly likely that they find a musician belting out innovative songs dedicated to Liverpool players. This is just one guy trying to improve the overall atmosphere amongst the drinking fans by creating clever little songs to amp up the mood. He can often be seen just with a guitar, playing a tune all on his own and hoping that fans join in with him.

Well, this is actually a local Liverpool-based singer Jack Gillbanks. He has been a regular at the Albert Pub since 2017 and can often be seen with a beer beside him. The musician is heavily involved in the music scene, but devotes a lot of time singing songs at the Albert and having a blast with his fellow Liverpool fans.

Gillbanks has over 6,000 followers on his Instagram, where he often posts videos of him singing songs. He also has his YouTube channel, but it has under 100 subscribers. His most popular video on YouTube is his song ‘Amongst the Streets of Liverpool’, which has over 2,000 views on YouTube, but over 6,000 streams on Spotify!

The singer is also a member of the Liverpool-based rock band ‘The Solaas’. They have only released two singles so far, with their song ‘Evergreen’ getting over 13,000 streams on Spotify.

The Solaas describe themselves as ‘Up and coming five piece indie rock band utilising soulful harmonies. Driving and uptempo indie beats matched with a trio of Liverpool’s finest vocalists to deliver some important messages of life’s journey,’ and Gillbanks is the band’s lead singer.

Gillbanks has recently earned traction on social media for belting out some groovy tunes for the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Alisson and Wataru Endo before the Newcastle United clash.

The chant for the Hungarian midfielder, especially, has gained major praise. The chant goes something like this:

‘My my Dominic Szoboszlai,

oh he comes from Hungary and he’ll make the Reds f****** fly.

Like the good old days when Bill Shankly was alive.

Singing he’s my Dominic Szoboszlai, he’s my Dominic Szoboszlai.’

This chant is heavily inspired by the popular Don McLean song ‘American Pie’. In fact, it’s inspired from the chorus of the song, which goes something like:

So, bye-bye, Miss American Pie

Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry

And them good ol’ boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye Singin’,

This’ll be the day that I die This’ll be the day that I die

Gillbanks might not be the most ‘viral’ musician in Liverpool, but at least he ensures that fans visiting the Albert have a delightful experience. The onus now is for him to create many groovy chants to ensure that Liverpool supporters can fully enjoy the feeling of winning the Premier League once again.
