Konaté 2026, Van Dijk Expiry: Madrid Threatens Liverpool’s Defense

Liverpool

This season, several fan favorites are expected to leave Liverpool. While the Reds have enjoyed their season under new boss Arne Slot, sitting 13 points clear at the top, they face a crucial transfer window ahead. The Merseyside club will need to make ‘big money moves’, especially signing new contracts and players.

This season, Ibrahima Konate has formed a solid defensive partnership with captain Virgil van Dijk, but with Konaté’s contract expiring in 2026 and Van Dijk’s deal running out at the end of the season, Liverpool could be left without a good backline. To make matters worse, reports suggest Real Madrid are keen on luring Konaté away, while Trent Alexander-Arnold is also heavily linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabéu.

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool are eyeing Club Brugge’s Joel Ordonez as a potential signing. The 20-year-old Ecuadorian has already made over 40 club appearances, impressing particularly in the Champions League this season. Standing at 6’2, he could form a strong partnership with Jarell Quansah, who has stepped up for Liverpool, whenever injuries hit the squad.

While center-back Joe Gomez remains under contract until 2027, his game time at Liverpool has been limited. With several key players nearing the end of their deals, the club cannot afford to lose them as free agents and contract renewals remain their top priority. After a few relatively quiet transfer windows, FSG may finally be compelled to break the bank and make significant moves this summer to strengthen the squad.
