Andy Robertson’s meteoric rise to fame boils down to just one factor: hard work. The Liverpool left-back’s career has only seen growth, and to be honest, he deserves all the plaudits he’s receiving.
From playing third division football in Scotland for Queen’s Park to becoming Liverpool’s first choice left-back and captaining the Scottish national team, Robbo’s story is one that inspires.
The buccaneering left-back caught the eye of many Premier League clubs during his spell with Hull City. All eyes were on Robertson to make a choice of club following the Tigers’ relegation in 16-17. Despite many suitors, Andy chose to sign for the red of Liverpool, where he almost immediately cemented the left-back spot.
It was his relentless stamina, calmness on the ball, high work-rate, defensive solidity and quality of contribution in the attacking third that caught the eye of Liverpool and gained him the captain’s armband for Scotland. Time and again, Robbo has put in a shift for the Reds, being one of the most consistent performers in the league.
This consistency and his contribution of 8 assists in the league is not undermined, which is evident from Firmino’s reaction to Robertson’s latest assist for the Brazilian in Liverpool’s 2-1 win at Anfield against Spurs. Robertson produced a peach of a cross with his left foot in the first half, laying the ball on a plate for Firmino to finish and give Liverpool the lead.
During the celebrations, Firmino can be seen mouthing the words, “What a cross!”, as Andy joins in on the celebrations. What a cross indeed!
Robertson now has recorded more assists this season than Salah, Silva, Willian and Ozil, to name a few. And he’s a left-back! It’s also worth noting that he’s an integral part of the meanest defense in the league, involved in 16 of Liverpool’s 17 clean sheets.
If Liverpool do go on to win the title, it’s safe to say that Robbo played a vital part in that charge, both offensively and defensively. He is definitely a contender for the league’s left-back of the season. Boy, do Liverpool have a player in their ranks!
