Tottenham Hotspur’s 2019-20 campaign was a forgettable one. The club sacked Mauricio Pochettino, appointed Jose Mourinho, finished 6th in the Premier League and were eliminated by RB Leipzig in the Champions League round of 16.
Besides, embarrassing penalty shootout defeats to Colchester United and Norwich City in the EFL Cup and the FA Cup respectively meant that Spurs finished yet another season empty handed.
While fans are understandably running out of patience with the performance levels of the players, one man is showing the requisite attitude which the supporters demand after a shambolic campaign.
22-year-old Steven Bergwijn was spotted running and working out (video below) late at night in Amsterdam.
While other players are out on their respective holidays, the youngster’s commitment, dedication and work ethic has pleased the Spurs’ faithful.
Bergwijn signed a five-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth a reported £26.7 million at the end of January 2020 transfer window.
He scored his first goal for the club in his Premier League debut, a 2–0 victory against Manchester City, and was also named Man of the Match.
On 6 March 2020, Bergwijn suffered a sprain to his left ankle in the match against Burnley which might have sidelined him for the rest of the season, but due to the Premier League break caused by COVID-19, he had time to recover and was able to return to the starting eleven, scoring against Manchester United in Tottenham’s first match post-break match.
The Dutch International will be hoping to play a much bigger role for the club next term and his outlook towards training is a positive sign and step in the right direction.
Fans want this attitude from their fellow players and young Bergwijn could be the example to follow.
