Jermain Defoe donates £1000 for each goal he scored for Tottenham against Wigan back in 2009
League One side Wigan Athletic was one of the handful of teams majorly affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The club had to face serious financial repercussions during the lockdown.
Unfortunately, things have now boiled onto a stage where the Latics are struggling to save their 88-year-old existence.
The club has gone into administration and faces a frightening possibility of not being able to find a suitable buyer before the commencement of the 20/21 season.
As a hopeful last resort, Wigan Athletic’s management recently launched a crowdfunding campaign with the aim of raising at least 50,000 pounds. The amount will help in self sustaining the club before an appropriate buyer is found.
The fans have been doing their bits to donate but the deadline of Monday is fast approaching. In their hour of need, the club and their fans have found an unlikely hero in former Tottenham Hotspur star Jermain Defoe.
In a cheeky yet overly optimistic effort to raise more funds, a Wigan supporter @elbalson reached out to the Rangers striker on Twitter, pleading him to donate a sum of 5000 pounds as a commemoration to each of the five goals he scored against the Latics for Spurs back in 2009.
Within 12-hours of the tweet an anonymous pledge of the very same amount was made on the crowdfunder website.
Considering the timing and magnitude of the donation, people on internet have speculated Defoe to have made the donation anonymously.
Since then Wigan supporters have flooded the former England international’s mentions, expressing their gratitude towards his deed
