Pandemonium ensued at Wembley Stadium as Harry Kane nudged Jack Grealish’s cross into the back of the net, and England had all but guaranteed their progress into the 2020 European Championship quarterfinal.
The Three Lions had just scored their second of the afternoon against old rivals in Germany, and a last-eight date with Ukraine beckoned for Gareth Southgate’s men.
The England players piled up on top of each other in jubilation as they celebrated the second goal, accompanied by substitutes and members of their backroom staff.
It was a total show of passion by not only the players celebrating by the corner flag, but also by Jordan Henderson who looked equally as passionate and overwhelmed alongside Southgate at the touchline.
Moments before England added a second, Jordan Henderson was getting ready to come on for Declan Rice who had pulled up with a cramp.
As the fourth official and the England staff were waiting for the passage of play to come to an end, the Three Lions had ventured on another attack through Germany’s left flank.
Henderson alongside his coach was commanding his teammates and patiently anticipating his introduction at 1-0 – to calm the nerves in midfield.
But Kane’s well-timed finish past Manuel Neuer to cap off the move meant that the Three Lions were two goals up, and a jubilant Henderson went running to join the players initially – but soon had a change of heart.
The Liverpool captain came back to embrace his coach who had achieved personal vindication against Germany after his penalty miss in the 1996 semifinals, as the two of them enjoyed a moment of pure ecstasy.
Wembley was buzzing as it always does when the Lions conquer, but nobody’s reaction to the win was more passionate and dedicated than Henderson.
The Liverpool captain might not start any matches at Euro 2020 owing to his recent return from injury and convincing performances from Declan Rice & Kalvin Phillips, but his reaction showed that he is as much a part of the England pack as anyone else and wouldn’t moan about his lack of game time one bit.
