Ajax have dropped one of the best kits of the upcoming season.
The Amsterdam outfit’s recently released new home kit for the 2021/2022 season is a retro rendition of the club’s kits of the yesteryears, made as a tribute to the fans.
The kit is clad in their traditional colours of red and white, but the layout is one that has attracted a lot of attention on social media.
The kit is a nod to the glorious years of the Dutch club’s past, an era where Ajax dominated European football. Ajax won three consecutive European Cups from 1971 to 1973.
In 1972, led by Johan Cruyff, Ajax had one of the best seasons ever by any football team winning the Eredivisie, the Dutch Cup, the European Cup and the Club World Cup.
Ajax have chosen to replicate those glorious years of the past in their kit which features a red mid-section flanked by white sides along with a white collar and grey shoulder stripes.
The kit also features the old Ajax crest that was used for 62 years from 1928 to 1990 – the most decorated part of their 121-year history.
On top of the other nods to the past in the kit, one of the most important ones is the inclusion of only squad numbers on the back of the shirts – players’ names would not feature.
The kit also serves as a tribute to the fans of the historical outfit, who have stuck with the team through thick and thin for decades.
As a result, the kit has attracted a lot of plaudits from the online football community, who have described it as one of the best kits to be worn in the season to come.
While it is a brilliant kit of its own, the most hopeful of Ajax fans will hope that the kit attracts the same amount of success as its predecessor did in their much-decorated past.
