Josh Cavallo is a 21-year-old Australian football player who plays for Adelaide United. With the help of his club, Cavallo has come out as gay today, thus becoming the only current male professional footballer in the world to do so.
This is both a courageous and intelligent move for the player because he knows he will no longer be accepted by some of his fans.
The mifielder came out publicly on social media, becoming just the third male professional football player to do so worldwide, after Justin Fashanu (UK) and Robbie Rogers (USA).
Josh Cavallo’s coming-out is a step in the right direction for LGBTQ+ athletes around the world, proving that homophobia is nothing more than just an outdated societal norm. This marks a historic moment for sports and hopefully, others will soon follow suit.
Josh Cavallo’s story is one of perseverance and hope. It shows that no matter what your circumstances are, you can make it to the top in your field if you put in enough hard work.
Twitter went all out in support as the likes of Gerard Pique and Antoine Griezmann hailed the Australian footballer for coming out of the closet.
