It’s no secret that turbulence is a frequent visitor at Chelsea Football Club, something that fans had hoped would change under the new ownership.
Unfortunately, drama is embedded into the very DNA of the club, and old tendencies struck once again, despite a different owner at the helm.
After several worrying displays in the League, a European defeat to Dinamo Zagreb ended up being the final straw, as Todd Boehly sacked Thomas Tuchel the very next day.
The news was met with universal shock and plenty of disappointment from the Blues’ faithful.
Throughout the transfer window, the new owners had emphasised their desire of building a project around the German, which made the sacking all the more startling.
Nevertheless, Boehly moved quickly following Tuchel’s dismissal, and soon the club announced the appointment of former Brighton gaffer Graham Potter.
The former Footballer has seen a rise to the top like no other, getting his start at Ostersunds FK before revolutionizing Brighton.
As per reports, Potter wanted some assurances in regards to his future, and Chelsea has duly obliged by handing him a 5-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
On top of cashing him out from his current contract, Todd Boehly and co are all set to pay the Englishman quite handsomely.
Managers in the Premier League usually fetch a pretty penny, and Potter’s brand new deal will place him on the list of the top 10 earning managers in the division.
The Top 10 list includes a few rather surprising names, although all of them are certainly deserving of the figures they net.
- Pep Guardiola – £19m/yr
- Jurgen Klopp – £16m/yr
- Antonio Conte – £15m/yr
- Graham Potter – £12m/yr
- Brendan Rodgers – £10m/yr
- Erik Ten Hag – £9m/yr
- Mikel Arteta – £8.3/yr
- Ralph Hassenhutl – £7m/yr
- Frank Lampard – £6m/yr
- David Moyes – £5m/yr
Aside from leapfrogging the likes of Erik ten Hag and Mikel Arteta, Potter’s new deal also overshadows his predecessor, as Tuchel reportedly earned around £7m/per year at Chelsea.
Additionally, the 47-year-old’s five-year contract will round off to £60m in total.
The figure reflects just how confident the owners are in Potter’s credentials, although he certainly has plenty to prove.
Only time will tell whether Todd Boehly’s first major gamble plays out in his favour.
