Back in August, Adult Swim, an American TV channel, launched an event called Wormageddon, which they called a “living episode.”
This was done to increase the hype around the launch of the sixth season of the popular show Rick and Morty.
Wormageddon is basically a global treasure hunt. There are 14 distinct locations with some of the Rick and Morty characters facing off against enormous worms somewhere in the world.
Much like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, anyone who finds one of the nine secret worms in these locations were eligible to receive some sort of reward.
A scene from this fan experience was revealed at Arsenal‘s Emirates Stadium in London, before the release of the new season.
This wormageddon scene, created in collaboration with sportswear giants Adidas, featured TV show characters Morty Smith and Mr Meeseeks, who were combating a mystery alien worm while also playing football.
The scene was used to promote the new Adidas X Speedportal boots, which the characters were wearing to play.
This unique design was revealed to the fans before the match against Aston Villa outside their stadium in London.
This isn’t the first time Adidas and the TV show Rick and Morty have collaborated.
They previously collaborated in July to introduce the Speedportal boot, which featured Liverpool star Mohammed Salah and Arsenal Women’s legend Vivianne Miedema in an original animation.
The Live Episode collaboration between the show and Adidas has now moved on to Arsenal’s rivals, Manchester United, it would appear.
In a recent photograph that went viral, huge Rick and Morty posters are visible hanging outside Old Trafford, Manchester United’s home ground. More specifically, on the exterior side of the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand.
The exact details and specifics of the promotion are yet to be revealed by the club.
However, the ongoing partnership between United and Adidas means that Manchester is a very obvious and straightforward destination for new shoe promotions.
Though some Man United fans seem not too happy about the commercialization of the club –
The Red Devils do not play at home till the 14th of October when they play in the Europa League against Omonia Nicosia of Cyprus.
Until then, we hope some sort of statement is released from one of the three parties involved so we can get some clarity.
