Wales against the USMNT proved to be an absolute thriller of a game, with two determined sides battling it out and eventually settling for a stalemate.
The first half was dominated by the Yanks, as their young side passed the ball around with purpose and found the opener through Timothy Weah.
However, they were unable to capitalize on their dominance any further, and the second 45 saw Wales assume control.
After the Welsh onslaught began, USA’s lead looked increasingly vulnerable.
Their defensive efforts eventually went in vain as a poor mistake handed Gareth Bale a penalty late in the half, which he calmly converted.
USMNT manager Gregg Berhalter was the subject of criticism following the game, as his tactical nous came under scrutiny.
His substitutions, in particular, seemed to be a reason for disapproval from fans.
However, one thing that wasn’t up for any sort of debate was Berhalter’s sneaker game, with everyone seemingly impressed by the pair he whipped out for matchday 1.
For the uninitiated, the 49-year-old happens to be a massive sneaker-head, a hobby that has stuck with him since childhood.
And now, with the funds to properly pursue his obsession, and a neat connection with USMNT sponsor Nike, Berhalter is living out every sneakerhead’s dream.
Since taking over the National team, the US coach has sported a different pair of Nike shoes for every game, each drippier than the last.
He has also made sure to pack well for the trip to Qatar, bringing along 7 different pairs of sneakers, he’s clearly prepared to go all the way to the finals.
For the opener, he picked a real treat, opting for a stunning pair of unreleased shoes.
Part of the collaboration line between Jordan and fashion boutique A Ma Maniere, his kicks for the night were the A Ma Maniere x Air Jordan 4.
Previous editions from this range are rare in quantity and retail for eye-watering figures, typically upwards of $100.
Safe to say, the unreleased pair on Berhalter was worth quite a bit.
Packed with details, the shoes come in a black and brown colourway, fitted with glossy tags that hang from the laces.
Paired alongside the ‘States’ tee, Berhalter passed the drip check with flying colours.
However, there’s certainly work to be done on the tactical front, although the USA will be encouraged by their start to the tournament.
