Following England’s 3-0 win against Wales in the World Cup, Three Lions’ forward Phil Foden became a topic of discussion online.
But not for the reasons you’d expect.
Fans had been clamouring to see Foden start against Wales, a wish Gareth Southgate duly granted, and an opportunity the 22-year-old grabbed with both hands.
Alongside Marcus Rashford, Foden was among the standouts for England as he grabbed a goal in the 51st minute of the game.
After full-time, plenty of praise went the Man City player’s way, although the discourse wasn’t entirely about his performance.
Instead, a fair few online were busy gawking at a picture of a grumpy cat and comparing it to Foden’s mug.
It all stemmed from an Instagram post by director Glenn Kitson, who often posts images of the unlikeliest celebrity doppelgangers.
After the game, Kitson posted his latest look-alike discovery, and it happened to be a moggy bearing an uncanny resemblance to Foden.
Placing the two alongside each other really makes the similarities pop out, with the hair being an obvious call-out.
Foden’s signature crop cut is unmissable, and well, so is this feline’s.
The centre is aptly cropped while the sides are trimmed entirely, it’s almost a perfect match.
Then we have the marine green eyes, another apparent similarity, and even the eye shape is essentially the same.
Perhaps the commonality of all is the jawline, as both the cat and Foden share similarly chiselled cheekbones.
Another reason for the resemblance could just be the annoyance of the cat.
After all, seeing the forward irritated on the pitch is a pretty frequent sight, and it really helps bring the comparison home.
It didn’t take long for the image to go viral on Twitter, and most fans were in agreement that the cat did indeed resemble Foden.
Many even dubbed it ‘Philline Foden’ of ‘Meowchester City’.
Pretty obvious pun work here, but it works.
